The future of Bridgwater
Are you an existing business in Bridgwater? Are you considering investing in Bridgwater?
Good! We welcome you to find out more about the future for our town, and your potential investment.
Bridgwater is moving into a time of change and real positive economic development. The town is experiencing a shift from the perception of predominantly blue collar to highly skilled and upper income earners, who are at the route of the future plans for economic development.
Situated off the M5 half way between the major cities of Exeter and Bristol and with the added benefit of two motorway junctions, the town has been highlighted as a key development and growth opportunity for inward investors. Many large companies are considering investment in Bridgwater due to its ideal location. Companies like EDF energy, Morrison’s/ DHL Distribution, Tesco’s, and several large housing and development contractors are a sample of these Inward investors.
Future development
Bridgwater Vision, the Chambers partners in the future development of the town have created a pathway that will not only see Bridgwater’s image change over the coming years, but also position Bridgwater as the leading and most desirable place to live, work and invest in Somerset, in comparison to its neighbouring market towns.
With investment coming into the town on a large scale, this has made the outlook for both the existing trade and blue collar work force that keeps the engine running, more appealing because competition for these services is likely to create higher pay.
For professional and white collar, not only the same concept applies, but more executive and white collar people will arrive in the town creating higher property values, more retail and consumer spending opportunities and generally increasing the demand for a better and higher value place to live and work.
This includes education facilities, more retail parks, schools, the expansion of the college/ university, more leisure and open space facilities and sports and social clubs.
History and heritage attractions (which the town currently has an abundance of) will need to be highlighted and tourist attractions created; this will also boost the whole visitor economy, again contributing towards the value and economic growth and lifestyle of everyday life in Bridgwater.
The impact of inward investment
The huge majority of businesses in Bridgwater are ‘Small to Medium size Enterprises’ (SMEs). Bridgwater has an abundance of skilled and talented SME businesses and for these SMEs the future is also very prosperous. With the increasing amount of inward investment to the town there will be an increasing need for the sub professions and trades skills. It means that more work and contracts will become available for local SMEs to secure and thus creating wealth and growth for all sectors.
The new government is very active in promoting what they describe as “The Big Society”. This in short means that many traditional public sector controlled community projects and organisations are likely to be either put out for tender or public/private sector partnerships formed. Again these are all very positive opportunities for local SMEs.
