Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce Expresses Concern Over Somerset Council’s Proposed Parking Charge Increases 20 February 2025, Bridgwater, Somerset

Thursday 20th February, 2025

Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce is expressing significant concern regarding Somerset Council’s recent proposals to increase parking charges across the county, including extending parking fees to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These changes, if enacted, will have a detrimental impact on local businesses, residents, and visitors.

The proposed changes include the introduction of charges at currently free car parks, county-wide overnight car parking charges, standardising Sunday parking charges at all car parks, and on-street charging to limited waiting bays in town centres. While we understand the council’s need to address financial challenges and ensure the parking service remains self-funded, we believe these measures will do more harm than good.

Local businesses, particularly those in town centres, rely heavily on accessible and affordable parking to attract customers. The introduction of 24/7 parking charges will deter shoppers and visitors, leading to a decline in footfall and, ultimately, a downturn in trade. This is especially concerning for small businesses already struggling with the effects of national economic pressures.

Furthermore, the proposed changes will disproportionately affect residents who rely on affordable parking for their daily activities. The introduction of overnight charges will place an additional financial burden on those who have no alternative but to park their vehicles on the street or in council-run car parks.

We urge Somerset Council to reconsider these proposals and engage in meaningful consultation with local businesses, residents, and other stakeholders. It is essential to find a balanced solution that addresses the council’s financial needs without jeopardising the vitality of our town centres and the well-being of our communities.

The Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce remains committed to supporting local businesses and ensuring that our town remains a vibrant and attractive place for residents and visitors alike. We call on Somerset Council to prioritise the long-term prosperity of our local economy and work collaboratively with us to find a more sustainable approach to parking management.
